|
ALLERONA, dating back to Roman or pre-Roman times, and 20 km. from Orvieto, is a picturesque hill town about 472 m. above sea level.
Remains of the feudal castle of Allerona include the ruins of the old walls, the two gates known as "del Sole" and "della luna" and the urban layout.
Inside the town, on the highest point, stands the old castle church dating to the twelfth century, renovated at the end of the last century and with paintings in the apse by the senese Arturo Viligiardi (1896).
Villalba and the Selva di Meana, bordering with Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, ore the two most interesting tourist areas. The former has a well-equipped public park while the latter has the state- owned park with Villa Cahen, in Art Nouveau style.
The clay pits to be found near the hamlet of Scalo ore an interesting site far fossil remains.
The road that crosses the public park of Villalba posses the ancient hamlet of San Pietro Acq'uaeortus, and then descends to Fabro passing through Osteriaccia, winding through the Mediterranean macchia or bush.
The most characteristic festival in Allerona is that of St. Isidoro, patron saint of the countryside, held on the third Sunday in May, with a historical procession in nineteenth-century costumes which presents the so-called "Pugnaioni", small allegorical floats with scenes of rural life.
The patron saint of Allerona is St. Ansano (Dec. 1st), solemnly celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
