The territory

The District, geographically outlined with a brand wich lies between the Amerino-Narnese area to the south, and the Orvietana area to the north, permits one to observe, in a relatively small ambit, widely varying landscapes that go from fertile alluvial plain to hill and eventually wooded limestone mountain rich in the typical features of Karts.
The territory, wich in the Plio-Pleistocenic Age was in a large part submerged under the Tiberino Lake, presents evident traces of fossils and deposits of marine origin.
The fossil forest is particularly spectacular; it was recently brought to light in the area near Dunarobba (a Commune of Avigliano Umbro) and it shows tree trunks of large dimension, up to 1,60 m. in diameter, 8 m. in heigth, in vertical position. There is no other known example of fossilized vegetable remains of such magnitude.
The Environment, still untouched, is strongly characterized by the progression of land use from vineyards to olive-groves, to cereal-crops.
The woody hill sides are visible over the whole region. In the Tiber Valley, near Attigliano, a dam built on the river Tiber to produce a hydro-electric power, has caused the formation of a humid zone, which became a Wildlife Park (Oasi Faunistica) in 1978. Many species of birds, such as herons, snipes, sea-crows, coots, water-hens, wild-ducks, god-wits, howks, live and nest every season in the Oasi.Special observatories allow close contact with the life of the Oasi.
The forest environmente is striking for the density of woods of oaks, and horn beams; in the northern part of the District, in the Commune of Avigliano, the picturesque hamlets of St. Restituta and Toscolano are immersed in the green of hundreds of acres of chestnuts.
The plantlife in the woods is particularly interesting being rich in ferns, wild orchids (protected), strawberries and mushrooms.
Many minor roads and paths which mark countryside and woods, from the plain to the highest points of Monte Pianicel Grande and Monte l'Aiola, ideal destination for hiking enthousiasts or riders.
The Parks of Cavallerizza (Amelia), S.Silvestro (Fornole), and Aiola (Guardea) offer large spaces equipped for pleasant breaks and natural views.
