Arrone
The old town of Arrone lies on a rocky hillside along the left bank of the River Nera.
The town was rather important in the Middle Ages because it was situated along the road connecting Abruzzo with the Duchy of Spoleto.
In 1240 Federico II of Swabia stopped here for a while.
The town, with a Medieval urban planning, is very picturesque, especially in its older part, known as La Terra, surrounded by ancient walls and towers which testify to its role as a guard fortress.
Entering the quarter through a fine ogival gate, the first thing to be admired is the little Gothic church of S.Giovanni (13th century), with polygonal apse, on which the bell-tower rises, and frescoes from the 15th century.
Of particular interest is also the church of S. Maria: it has a fine portal from the 1400s; the interior has three naves divided by pillars supporting arches, and three apses; the church contains important works of art: in the median apse there are frescoes by Vincenzo Tamagni and Giovanni da Spoleto, an imitation of the ones by Filippo Lippi in the Cathedral of Spoleto; there are other frescoes covering the perimetrical niches by Umbrian School of the 1500s and also interesting terracottas.
In the surrounding of Arrone there are other picturesque little town: Castel di Lago, Collestatte and Torreorsina.
