Itinerary: Bastia Umbra - Costano - Tordandrea - Castelnuovo

• Once outside of Assisi, take Highway 144 in the direction of Perugia. After about 4 km., follow the signs to Bastia Umbra. From Bastia take the provincial road for Bettona as far as Costano where you can visit the Church of the SS. Crocifisso (the Most Holy Cross) with paintings of the 20th century Umbrian school and, nearby, the little Church of San Francescuccio, mentioned in The Little Flowers of Saint Francis. Then take the road for Tordandrea to see the Church of San Bernardino with a painting attributed to Pinturicchio and a fresco from the 15th century and, inside the ancient castle, the Chapel of the Maestà with the remains of frescos from the 15th and 16th century. Continue on to Castelnuovo, (ancient village with the Church of Santa Lucia - frescos from the 15th and 16th century, and the modern parish church with interesting stained glass windows). From here return to Assisi by way of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
