Castello

Attigliano.
The name has Roman origins and some people believe that the name originates from "ad tilium" because of the presence of many lime-trees along the banks of the Tiber.
The area has Umbrian and Etruscan origins and is bordered by the natural line of the Tiber. This land was inhabited by both the Umbrian and Etruscan peoples, as the discoveries of chamber-tombs and found at Marziano and Jana testify.
The Castle was founded by the successors of Count Offredo and because of its important position over the river, underwent several different dominions during the Medieval Age; at first the Castle was under the Jurisdiction of the Orsini and the Borghese families, then under that of the Alviano.
Under the Signoria of Bartholomew of Alviano the towers that previously ended with an embattled balcony, where raised and further pentagonal tower added with catapult called "Bombarda".
In the XVI century, next to the tower, the Baron's Palace was built, it testifies to ancient splendours and was subsequently enlarged under the rule of the Farnese family. It is still possible to admire some parts of the six towers of the Palace and part of the Castle perimetre walls.

Some places worth seeing ...

The Ancient Castle, composed of five circular towers and a pentagonal watchtower.
Piazza Rocca, where a bell-tower still survives. On the bell-tower can see a twelve hour clock with one hand, which was an evolution of the six hour one of the XV century and the predecessor of the modern clock whit two hands.
The Modern Parish Church of the Martyr St. Lorenzo, which is characterised by some artistic glass windows and a bronze portal by the sculptress Nadia Rognoni.
