Historical notices
Probably of Etruscan origins, in Roman age it was densely populated. The relics of this period are numerous. The castle was built between the 10th and the 11th century. Along with the free Commune the powerful Ghibelline seigniory of the Baschi family ruled, taking part in the struggles against the Guelph party. At the apex of its power this family owned 60 castles. Among the most important personages, Bindo and the count Ranuccio are to be mentioned. During the rule of the latter, his palace (now theTown Hall) and the church of St. Nicoḷ were built. This seigniory lasted until 1770.
Curiosities
Baschi, now a place of mild and hospitable people, has the same name of a family who was quite bellicose. Among the gloomiest personages in the clan stands out Bindo de' Baschi, named "Pastacalda" (quick-tempered) because of his irascible character. He was very young when he happened to lead the largest Ghibelline faction in Umbria and still young he was when he found his death, 27 years of age, slaughtered by the Guelphs.
