Crib ( XVI century )
Crib ( XVI century )

It is called "the blissful doorway of Umbria". It has got 1900 inhabitants and it stands on a rocky spur surrounded by hills sloping down to the Tiber.
You can reach Calvi leaving motorway A1 at Magliano Sabina and taking the Via Flaminia to Otricoli which is 9 km from Calvi.
It is a very old settlement dating from the Middle Bronze Age. On the summit of St.Pancras Mount we can see the remains of a temple of the Umbrian Sabellian area.
In the XII century it is part of the Diocese of Narni and up to 1860, except for short periods of the vicariate of Lorenzo de' Ceri and of the French domination, it was a free city of the Church State.
The old town centre, made up of the castle and houses of the village, is situated along medieval lanes where we can admire arches, vaults and the reamains of the walls and towers Of great historical and artistical interest is the Nunnery of the Ursulines, built by Ferdinando Fuga and the Churches of St. Brigid, of Our Lady the Virgin Mary received into Heaven, of St. Francis where we can see valuable paintings.

In the Church of St. Antony there is a monumental crib of the XVI century with 30 statues made of plychrome terracotta.
On the walls of the streets we can admire many paintings which represent the "Nativity" by Italian and foreign artists.
