Campello sul Clitunno
Campello sul Clitunno

Campello sul Clitunno
agricultural centre with some industrial activities, is a small town situated along the Flaminia route, not far from the Spring of the River Clitunno.
The most interesting sight to visit is the Church of S.Maria della Bianca, built in the 16th century: besides the fine portal decorated by Cione di Taddeo da Lugano, the building presents in the apse "Incoronazione di Maria" by Fabio Angelucci - a painter from Marche active between 16th and 17th centuries - and, in the sacristy, "Annunciazione" and "Presepio" by Spagna (15th-16th century); the interior, with a only nave, was decorated by Valadier in the 19th century.
Leaving the town going North-East and climbing a hill you arrive to Campello Alto: the village derives its name from that of a castle built by Campello Rovero, Baron of Borgogna, in the 11th century.
Nowadays the structure is occupied by a Barnabite convent, where you can admire a fresco by Spagna - "Madonna della Misericordia" - and another in Giotto's style - "Crocefissione e Santi".
Following the road to Pettino and arriving to the Mount of Campello you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Clitunno valley and its ancient villages, such as Azzano and Beroide.
