CANNARA (197 metres above sea level)
Today an active agricultural and craft centre, Cannara, which in the Middle Ages was a sturdy fortification, was subject first to Assisi and later to Perugia.
sights
Worthy noting are the Municipio (Town Hall) with its Roman remains, the Churches of San Biagio, San Francesco (with a painting by N.Alunno), Buona Morte (where, according to tradition, Saint Francis instituted the Third Order), San Sebastiano, where frescos of various epochs detached from the walls of churches and convents in the area are exhibited.
Little more than a kilometre from the town, on the road to Bevagna after passing the little Church of San Giovanni decollato on the left, you reach Pian d'Arca, legendary site of Saint Francis sermon to the birds,
immortalized by Giotto's fresco in the Upper Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.
