Museums and collections
MUNICIPAL GALLERY - Housed in the Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, it is the richest picture gallery in Umbria after the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia.
On display are paintings by the major Italian artists; among the most important works there are the "Martirio di S. Sebastiano" by Luca Signorelli, the "Incoronazione della Vergine" by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the "Maestà" by the Master of Città di Castello (14th century), the "Testa di Gesù" attributed to Giusto di Gand, a banner decorated by the young Raffaello, and many other paintings, frescoes, bas riliefs and art objects.
CAPITOLO MUSEUM - Situated near the Cathedral, it contains an important collection of sacred and ritual objects and very fine pieces of gold-work including an embossed silver altar-frontal and a crosier in Tuscan style from the 14th century; moreover, the so-called Canoscio treasure, found by chance in 1935 near the Sanctuary of Canoscio: a collection of palaeo-christian objects including nine plates - two incised and five decorated in relief - a large plate and two cups.
BURRI COLLECTIONS - Housed one in the Albizzini Palace (Garibaldi square) and the other in the drying- rooms of the former Rignaldello Tobacco Factory, they where donated by the Maestro Burri himself to his native city in 1982 and 1990. Fundamental point of reference as to contemporary art, the collections offer the largest documentation of the artist's production.
FOLK TRADITIONS CENTRE - Located in Garavelle, this folk museum offers an interesting documentation, faithful and detailed, of the way people lived in the Upper Tiber Valley in past years, with typical and significant objects of peasant and craft tradition. Nearby the museum there is Villa Cappelletti, where is housed a curious model railway collection that illustrates the history of Italian railways.
