Costacciaro
The castle of Costacciaro, "Castrum Costacciari", was owned, in the second half of the 13th century, by the independent state of Gubbio, which took care of the works of fortification, because of its important position near the consular road Flaminia.
A new defensive structure, in part still existing, was ordered by Federico da Montefeltro to be built by the famous military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, after Gubbio became part of the dukedom of Urbino. This architect was even commissioned to build a hydric system.
Costacciaro was part of the Eugubian territory until the restauration of the power of the Church: in 1860 it became part of the reign of Italy.
An important citizen of Costacciaro was Bonavetura Pio Fauni, general minister of the friars minor. From 1543 to 1547 he participated in the Council of Trento and in 1549 he was nominated bishop of Acqui by Pope Paul III.

Main places of interest:
Church of St Francis (13th century), with the marvellous Romanesque facade in limestone from Mount Cucco; inside there is a valuable fresco representing St Sebastian's martyrdom - the Rivellino, a powerful, imposing defensive tower projected by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The Civic Tower, main element of the first town wall, is from the XIII century.
