The Bottaccione gorge
Situated between Mount Foce and Mount Ingino, the Bottaccione Gorge has begun to be very famous in the scientific world because it seems that in this place the scientist Alvarez might have found the resolution of the problem concerning the dinosaurs'sudden extintion.
Among the rocks of the gorge - the age of which is between 140 and 65 million years - Alvarez and his group found, in the Seventies, a large quantity of iridium: because of this discovery the scientists formulated the hypothesis of an ecological catastrophe caused by the large quantity of powder produced by the impact of an enormous meteorite hitting the earth.
Anyway, the Gorge is a very interesting sight not only for this reason, but also for important historic monuments such as St.Ambrogio's Hermitage and the Medieval Aqueduct.
Placed against the rocky wall of the Mount Foce, perpendicular to the Bottaccione Valley, the ermitage was built in the 14th century, probably on the ruins of an ancient hermits'seattlement (6th-7th centuries) .
The complex church-monastery is vast but the state of conservation is not so good: in fact there is danger of collapse and the structure can't be visited.
The Medieval Aqueduct was built near the Camignano stream and a large cistern was created to regulate the flow of water and its distribution among the mills in the valley.
Then the people of Gubbio decided to build an aqueduct which carried water to the town: the architect and supervisor was the famous Matteo Gattapone.
The aqueduct is still working at the present time.
