Surroundings
The surroundings of the town of Foligno are very pleasant: they offer a luxuriant nature, magnificent landscapes and artistic testimonies of primary importance.
Very romantic, in a scenery of olive groves and woods, is the road to the splendid Benedictine ABBEY OF SASSOVIVO, founded about in1000 AD and become an important studium in the 14th century; notable is the cloister, a Romanesque structure erected in 1229 by Pietro de Maria: it consists of 128 colonnettes supporting 58 Romanesque arches and a classical lintel made by coloured marble and mosaics from Rome. Not far from the cloister there is a 14th century porch leading to a crypt (10th century), known as Cappella del Beato Alano, which represents a part of the first nucleus of Sassovivo.
Going towards east, towards the Marche, one arrives in the area of COLFIORITO, a place of great interest for its environments: crossed the pass (m 821), one may see the Palude (the marsh), the bottom of which, rich in aquatic vegetation, is green even during the driest seasons, creating a notable contrast with the surrounding bare mounts. After the small town of Colfiorito, near which stands the beautiful church of S. Maria di Plestia – dating back to the 10th century and built with Roman materials – one reaches the majestic Plan of Colfiorito, located at an altitude of m 750, on the border between the Marche and Umbria: a lake in the old days, drained at the end of the 15th century, it is now an infinite meadow with neither trees nor houses, encircled by mountains 1000 metres high, an unique landscape in the region.
Another place not to be missed, not far from Foligno, is the impressive GROTTA DI PALE: visited since the last centuries, it is a huge calcareous cave with superb stalactites which meet massive stalagmites.
There are many other corners worth seeing: the uncontaminated environment characterising this land frame a lot of picturesque villages which reveal unexpected treasures, in a unique and unforgettable setting, and all this is Foligno with its territory.
