Fossato di Vico

Fossato di Vico
An important junction of the consular road Flaminia. Historical heir of the ancient "Helvillum Vicus", Umbrian centre federated with Rome, it was almost certainly destroyed during the barbarian invasion.
About the origin of the castle of Fossato di Vico and also the present village, we know that in 936 it was given to the lord Vico, imperial deputy of Nocera, by Emperor Otto III and then donated (1003) to the monastery of St Maria Appennino.
Under the control of Perugia from 1208, it followed its fate.
In 1540 with Perugia and other towns it was occupied by the army of the Church and since then its happenings were connected with those of other parts of Umbria until its annexation to the reign of Italy.
Very nice place for simmer visits and holidays, it has accomodation facilities and restaurants.

Main places of interest:
Roman bridge: we can see along the Flaminia road - Rocca di Fossato: there are only some pieces left - Church of St Benedetto (XIV century) - Church of St Peter - Church of the Piaggiola (XV century) - Church of St Cristoforo, St Sebastian and St Maria della Fonte, an ancient convent of Benedictine nuns (XIII and XIV century).
