Giove.
Easy to reach from the motorway A1, Attigliano exit, the little centre of Giove is situated on the terraced surface of a hill system which goes down towards the Tiber.
The place-name originates from the existence, in the past, of a temple dedicated to Jupiter, a divinity to whom many hills were consecrated long before the ethnic division between Umbrians and Etruscans. That the territory was already inhabited in the Roman Age is shown by the many archaeological remains which include tombs, ruins of buildings, coins etc., and traces of the harbour of St. Valentine. Of the Medieval Age a part of the boundary wall and some towers remain.
In the ancient documents relating to the town (the first known is dated 8 August 1191) the Castle is recorded with the name of Castle of Juvo (or Jugo) and Jupiter, too. It is known that the Castle, because of its position on the Tiber river, was always contested by the major Communes of the area, by the Church and by the leaders of Alviano. In 1328 Pope Urbano Vi assigned it to Peter, Count of Anguillara, taking it from the dominion of Orvieto. In 1465 the inhabitants of Amelia occupied the Castle and consigned it to Paolo II Farnese.

Some Places Worth Seeing ...
The Ducal Palace, built at the beginning of the XVI century, on the ruins of the destroyed fortress.
The structure, still incomplete, was inherited by the Mattei-Canonici family and, nowadays, it is a private residence.
The inner halls are decorated with pictures of mythological inspiration attributed to Domenichino, whereas other pictures inspired by biblical subject are attributed to Alfani and Paolo Veronesi.
The inner part of the Castle also presents an unusual spiral staircase which gave direct access from the main entrance to the upper floors.
The building has 365 windows, one for each day of the years.
The Village, with its characteristic alleys, arches and stairways, interwoven with small houses.
The Parish Church, where there is a picture of Assunta, of the Alunno school.
