Lisciano Niccone
Of extremely ancient origin, the territory of Lisciano was certainly inhabited by the Etruscans as is testified by the nearby hypogeum of Villa Sagraia and by the fortified village of Bellona on the top of Monte Murlo.
We also know that in 217 B.C. after the disastrous battle of Lake Trasimeno, the people of Lisciano and Bellona gave succour to the Roman soldiers who had escaped the massacre, and for this reason Hannibal put the territory to fire and sword.
It is possible that Lisciano owes its name to one Lisius or Licius who owned land there in Roman times. The addition of Niccone comes from that of the stream running the entire length of the Piene Valley of which Benedictine monks were the first to start reclamation. The ruins of their ancient Abbey of S. Benedetto can still be seen on the mountain-side.
Pian di Marte, situated not far from Lisciano, may have been the birth-place of the Roman Emperor Pertinax, who succeeded Commodus. During the Byzantine period, the entire valley had an important strategic position, since it provided a narrow and well-fortified way of communication between Roma and Ancona, via Perugia and the Upper Tiber Valley. The castles of Lisciano, Pierle, Danciano, Pugnano, Sorbello and Reschio bear witness to the existence of this line of defence.
In 1202 the castle of Lisciano was placed under the protection of Perugia by its owners, the Margraves dei Monte. After a brief period in which the castle belonged to the Casali family of Cortona, in 1479 it returned under papal sway until it was united to the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
To be seen:
on the hill facing the village, the ancient Castle of Lisciano still arouses deep feelings of emotion, as do the castles of Reschio, Sorbello and Pierle;
the Church of S. Tommaso and that of S. Maria delle Corti.
Waiting to be discovered:
climbing the road which leads to Tuoro, a fantastic view of Lake Trasimeno from the top of Cima Gasparini, and proceeding towards Borghetto, the scene of the famous battle of Hannibal against the Roman troops commanded by Consul Flaminius.
Not to be missed:
the opportunity for splendid excursions in a still unspoilt countryside. The Bringolo Fiesta (a local eagles pasta speciality) is held in June.
What to buy:
genuine cheeses made by the local shepherds, wild mushrooms and chestnuts when in season.
