Cultural sights

At the south-east end of the town is an impressive Gate, once the only entrance to the castle. It consists of a round arch surmounted by a three floor tower where the guardrooms were.
A little furter on there is another door to the first nucleus of the castle.
In the town centre we find the Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria. To be dated probably to a period before 1400. The front went through different modifications; previously the church had no bell tower and a single aisle. The bell tower was built in 1616. Inside there are large paintings depicting stories of the Confraternities. A few kilometres far you can see the Ruins of the Castle of Carnano. Its history is connected with that of the lords of Baschi who expanded their dominion up to this place. In 1200 already, chronicles talk about quarrels between the Baschis and the Baschis of Carnano. The castle was finished in 1400. Imposing, built on the homonymous rock, it dominates the deep valley below; after the among kin slaughter of 1553 made by Attilio di Carnano, the Apostolic Legate in Perugia ordered the demolition and the pillage of the castle. Parts of the castle walls and the apse of the church of S. Maria is all that remains of it.
Above Tenaglie (hamlet of Montecchio) stands out the Ancajani PaIace. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Filippo Ancajani, knight of St. John of Jerusalem and sergeant-major of the Pope's army, on the foundations of an old castle. It was restored at the end of the 19th century and again a few years ago by the present owners, who realized an interesting Museum of Countryside Civilization in a large adjacent building.

Strolls

A classic stroll, fit to good walkers, is the one taking from Montecchio to Pian dell'Ara, passing by the "Cima Pelata" of Mount Melezzole.
From up there, with a pair of good binoculars and on a clear day, you might see Rome and the sea.
