The Necropolis
In the eighties an Umbrian-Etruscan necropolis was dug up in a place called Fosso San Lorenzo. It goes back to a period between the 6th and the 4th century. The dimension of the area is incredibly large (about hundreds of tombs still to be dug up).
The great extent of this "town of the dead" implies the existence of a big centre, not yet located, where, due to the nearness of the river Tiber, there should have
happened the exchange of goods between the Etruscans and the ltalics.
A short open corridor, the "dromos", leads to the tombs fully dug into the rock.
They consist of a quadrangular room, a continuous pier mostly on three sides. The depositions followed one another over a long time with a superimposition of the corpses.
The funeral "corredo" consisted of "fibulae", rings, spears and swords, vases of different kinds, plenty of "buccheri".
