Paciano

Madonna della Misericordia

Chiesa di San Carlo
|
Paciano
Paciano rises on a spur of Monte Petrarvella (391m a.s.l.) and preserves intact to this day its mediaeval aspect, with the Trecento Town Hall, the Rastrella and Fiorentina gates of the same period, and the crenellated Torre d'Orlando.
Its name (which was Pacciano until the seventeenth century) descents from the family Pacci of Cortona.
In the Church of San Giuseppe, the ancient gon-falon of the Commune depicting the "Madonna of Mercy" is on view, work of a pupil of Bonfigli, while in the rooms of the erstwhile Confraternity of the Misericordia, today a picture gallery, are two Quattrocento panels and a fresco by Francesco di Castel della Pieve - believed to have been Perugino's teacher.
The nearby Church of San Carlo greets both visitors and the faithful with its fine Seicento portal.
The important nature area of Monte Pausillo, one of the richest habitats of Mediterranean wild-life, lies in habitats Panicale territory.
From its hilltops, an eagle's-eye view takes in three lakes: those of Trasimeno, Chiusi and Montepulciano.

Art Collection of St. Joseph's
In the medieval centre of the village, the headquarters of the ancient confraternity of the Holy Sacrament with a large and expressive "Crucifission" by Francesco da Castel della Pieva (1452), houses an art collection which, through its valuable exhibits, documents the history of Paciano's art from Etruscan times to the early XVII Century.
Festival of Oil (Festa dell'Olio)
This takes place during the first ten days of December, to coincide with the harvest and pressing of the olives. As well as enjoying the various festivities in the programme, you can taste the pure produce and typical dishes of the area, served in characteristic restaurants.
