Penna in Teverina.
Situated on the ridge of a prominent hill, the village faces the Tiber Valley. It is a small Commune of the Amelia District but because of its proximity to Rome and its lovely countryside, the population considerably increases during the summer.
The Castle was constantly contested by the Orsini and the Colonna families in the VI century. Penna never enjoyed periods of autonomy because it was always subjugated by the Pope of Amelia. In 1492 Stefano Colonna entrusted the village to the jurisdiction of the Commune of Amelia. Colonna himself was to sell it again in 1502 to the Orsini family, who held power until the extinction of the lineage (XVII century). In fact Penna was always the objet of reassignment, compensation, exchange and reconquest.
Some places worth seeing ...
The Ancient Medieval Village, placed on a natural terrace, which faces the Tiber upstream from its confluence with Rio Grande, near Orte.
The Civic Door, with its frame of ashlar which seems to be suffocated by the huge, apse-shaped structure of the Parish Church.
The Typical Seats next to the door of the Church, both inside and outside the walls, remind us of medieval town-planning and of traditional country life of the square on the street, (which served a sitting-room for the people).
The Orsini Palace, situated on the left of Via Medioevale, takes its name Maharbale Orsini, direct successor the first owner; on the skirt-roof, the coat of arms with the rose of the Orsini family and the eel of the Anguillara's reminds us of the links between the two families.
The Bust of "the Mammalocchi": these are columns of travertine with allegorical figuration and are situated at the entrance of a master's property.
Porta Novella or Portonella: it replaces a cylindrical tower which once looked across the Tiber Valley.
