The touristic district of Perugia includes, besides the chief town of the region, the communes of Corciano, Torgiano and Deruta: these small cities, together with the other numerous villages spread over this area, were always and indissolubly linked to the destiny of Perugia, both politically and economically, in this important territory situated in the central part of the region.
Umbria is the only region in peninsular Italy to have no outlet on the sea: it seems to be almost constrained among Marche, Lazio and Toscana, and this physical condition makes territoriality and verticality be the dominant characters in the landscape.
In this land the relation between man and nature and between settlement and territory is still very strong, and the appearance itself of the landscape is deeply humanized.
Perugia dominates an area full of fortified villages, guard towers, agricoltural settlements; in the countryside we discover small country churches, chapel, shrines and other interesting rural buildings which give evidence to the fact that the landscape seems to exist only connected with the human presence.
Constant, in all these cities, the existence of the Commune and the Piazza, the last representing a real territorial centre, point of intersection of the main roads, and the place where everything happens, from market to politics.
To wander around the splendid Perugia with its thousand of archs, or through the wonderful countryside, and to observe the Tiber running in the green fields at sunset: the serenity of these natural views makes you understand the sense of the intense feeling between man and territory, urban and rural life, history and landscape.
