Piegaro

Castello di Cibottola

Castiglion Fosco

Piegaro
Plunged in woods of Turkey and pubescent oaks, very rich in wild life, Piegaro (356m a.s.l.) overlooks the western side of the Fosso del Nestore from the heights of a hill.
The original mediaeval aspect remains unchanged, and the closely-knit structure incorporates remains of the ancient walls and towers.
During the XIIIth century, some skilled glaziers from Venice, attracted by the abundance of timber and water vital for glass-making, made of this hamlet a renowned centre for the production of glass.
The modern factories of today stem from this tradition. This is the starting point for excursions to the magnificent pinewood of Monte Petrarvella (645 m a.s.l.) and Monte Pausillo (620 m a.s.l.), with a fantastic panorama. Piegaro territory includes Cibottola, where one of the first franciscan monastery was founded and where St. Francis had lived a certain time.
It can be reached on a good road which goes up the valley at the back of Pietrafitta. This town conserves an important paleontologic collection, prepared with recoveries found in its brown coal mine.
worth seeing …
Castello di Cibottola
A small castle situated a short distance from Pietrafitta. Of the ancient structure there remains a large part of the outer walls, the entrance gate with the complete floor of its drawbridge, and an octagonal tower 20 metres high (recently restored). In the tower there is a bell weighing 500 kgs (half a ton) donated in 1850 by Pietro Tocchi, Rector of Perugia University.
Castiglion Fosco
On the slope of a hill, among the silvery green of olive trees and the more sombre green of oak and chestnut, sits the small medieval village of Castiglion Fosco, 350 m above sea level. The main attraction is its cylindrical tower, set on sloping base. It was begun in 1462 and completed in 1500, a fact confirmed by the inscription carved on a stone on the second floor.
