Pietralunga
rises on a hill 566 m. high, and the first settlement was certainly founded by ancient Umbrian peoples of the area. This very remote origin is testified by the finding of an Etruscan flute made out of a human tibia, now in the Archaeological Museum of Perugia, and also by the presence of many Roman villas. The spread of Christianity is related in legends about Crescenzio, slayer of a dragon, who was beheaded and buried in what is today the Pieve de' Saddi, built on the scene of his death. His remains were later purloined and removed to the Cathedral of Urbino.
Pietralunga still preserves its mediaeval aspect, surrounded by walls and overlooked by the Lombard Rocca. The fortress was built in the 8th century, and though modified in part, still presents its original pentagonal base. Of particular significance is the parish church of S. Maria in the ancient town core. Dating back to the XIIIth century, its superb Romanesque portal now rises at the rear of the building.
Plunged in greenery is the modem com-plex of Candeleto, fully equipped with a camping site, hotel and restaurant, sports and leisure facilities (swimming--pool and tennis courts). Candeleto is the ideal place for nature-lovers. From here, within easy reach are the historic centres of Umbria, the green heart of Italy, universally famed on account of their art, monuments and cultural events.

To be seen:
the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Rimedi, the Pieve dei Saddi and the fresco by Raffaellino del Colle in the Pietralunga parish church, which portrays the Martyrdom of St Sebastian, with fine chromatic effects and harmonious figures.
Near the former ASFD estate in Candeleto is the Natural History Museum, a collection of 300 species of animals arranged in settings which reconstruct their specifically Umbrian habitat, the exhibition together with the Candeleto ha-ven form an interesting countryside itinerary.

Waiting to be discovered:
the remains of ancient Roman villas scattered in the territory, outcrops with Miocenic fossils, farreaching high-trunk pinewoods, open to the public and to the Faunal-Venation Board.

Not to be missed:
the peace and quiet of the Candeleto tourist complex, with a camping site surrounded by a large park, tennis courts, roller-skating rink, swimming-pool with diving boards, play-ground and children's pool; a well equipped establishment to meet all requirements with a bar, and a snack-bar to taste the typical local cuisine.
Candeleto is a true oasis for sports lovers, for those who fancy shows and events, for nature-lovers in the tranquil atmosphere of the Umbrian hills.

What to buy:
truffles and wild mushrooms when in season, and the prized Pietralunga potato.
