Here, Man has never attempted to tame Nature, but has made instead a place of refuge for solitude and meditation.
The swings and roundabouts of history have brought both saints and rebels to Poggiodomo: monks and hermits; mystics; refugees from the mediaeval turmoil of the Ghibelline faction; and most recently the partisans who in the last war founded here one of their most efficient brigades.
All have left their mark.
The Hermitage of Madonna della Stella, object of contention between Poggiodomo and Cerreto, is a perfect symbol of solitude; here for many hundreds of years have come great mystics, choosing this lonely spot as their refuge and place of contemplation.
