Polino

Polino, the commune with the fewest population in Umbria, is situated at an altitude of 836 metres, in a magnificent green scenery dominating the valley of the stream Rosciano.
Of medieval origin, it was a fortress belonging to various feudal lords and dominion of the Duchy of Spoleto.
In more ancient times the town was protected by a double wall and the inner part contained the nobility's palaces.
The oldest town, located in a higher position, developed around the church and two old buildings; a 16th century fortress with cylindrical bastions dominates the centre.
In the square through which one enters the town there is a fine fountain from the 1600s in the style of Mannerism commissioned by Marquis Castelli, Count of Collestatte and Torreorsina, perpetual governor of Polino.
The surroundings of the town are very pleasant: panoramic roads and places from which the eyes can rove from the Sibillini to Mount Terminillo, from Monteleone di Spoleto to Greccio.
At one's disposal also ski-runs: a cross-country run (5 km) and others for downhill skiing.
The area of Polino is very rich in fossils, with rocks dating back to Triassic and Miocene; in ancient times the town was famous for its marble quarries, iron fields, and a gold mine, at present closed for restoration work.
