PORANO lies on a hill opposite the cliff of Orvieto; the territory of the town, wedged into that of Orvieto, mostly borders with the province of Viterbo.
Near the historical center, which is 444 m. above sea level, are two splendid buildings, Castel Rubello and the Villa Paolina, now a centre for scientific research of the Istituto of Agroselvicoltura (field-forestry) of the CNR (National Research Council), ad with a spacious park where the prestigious National Horse Show is held each year. The villa belonged to the Gualterio family and in the nineteenth century Filippo Antonio Gualterio, a leading figure in the Italian Risorgimento, still lived there.
A considerable number of archaeological finds have come to the light in the territory of Porano. Among the most important are the painted Etruscan tombs (4th century B.C.) - those of the Hescanas and the two Golini tombs of the Settecamini necropolis. The frescoes of the latter two are now on view in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Orvieto.
There are many festivities in Porano, including that of the patron Saint Bernardino of Siena on May 20th.
The old traditions that reflect a world centered on horses and the buying and selling of livestock, have given way in our times to the production of grain, oil and fine wines. Its site and climate make modern Porano an elegant residential zone barely 8 - 10 Km. from Orvieto.
