Giostra della Quintana
Since 1946 Foligno has recreated the atmosphere of a XVII century chivalry tournement. During the 1613 carnival noble knights challanged each other to decide whether an honourable knight had to be faithful to his prince or to his lady. Tournaments were first documented in 1448. Nowadays representing 10 different boroughs - Ammanniti, Badia, Cassero, Contrastanga, Croce Bianca, Giotti, La Mora, Morlupo, Pugilli, Spada - take part in the spectacular ring tournament. The knights' task is to thread rings of diminishing diameter with a lance in 3 breathtaking sequences. The rings are hanging from the arm of a wooden statue representing a XVII century warrior. The winner is awarded a "palio".
The costumes
The costumes employed in the Quintana can be ascribed to the historical period that goes from 1580 to 1620, the papal one in particular. The elder and those who belonged to the upper classes used to wear renaissance costumes. At the beginning of the XVII century the
youngs' fashion was characterized by chromatic scales, sarched and lace collars, and by mantles draped on the shoulder and dropping on the arm. Refined silk clothes, velvets and damasks enriched with geometrical laces and ruffs were used.
The Baroc Banquette
Since the renaissance cookery has become an "expression of civilization". Princes not only used to collect works of art, but also relied on experts, called "Scalchi ", who could organize their banquets. The "Trinciante" also played an important role: with his knives, forked stichs and small shovels, he skillfully carved meat and fish. Books containing new, elaborate recipes were written: gastronomy was born. As the guests reached the dining room, the "Trinciante" gave them a chair, the "Scalco" uncovered the table-ware, the cup bearer put the napkins
The Inns
In the old stately homes of the town there are typical inns, where you can taste umbrian dishes and dishes of the seventeenth century.
Baroque dance and music performance are given in the main square of each district.
