Sant'Anatolia can boast of being the oldest settlement in the Nerina valley; it also gave the valley its name.
The prehistoric inhabitants of the valley were the Naharc tribe who gave the name Nera to the river flowing through it, and so the valley became known as Valnerina.
Both the river and the steep-sided valley through which it flows have had on important part to play in the history of this area, permanently up in arms in self-defence.
The only settlement which was made here is the castle; Sant'Anatolia itself and the hamlets of Caso, Gavelli and Castel San Felice grew up around ancient castles built in strategic positions on the sloping sides of the valley.
The river is a precious natural resource nowadays, but in ancient times it was, considered a terrifying dragon; its breath poisoned the air and it was defeated only by intervention of two saints, saint Mauro and saint Felice.
This touching allegory of the reclaiming of the mar-shy land around the river can be seen in the splendid carving on the facade of the church of San Felice which nestles at the foot of the castle bearing the same name.
