Scheggia and Pascelupo
The castle of "La Schizza" was probably built in the 10th century, after the Hungarian invasion (927), in the place where the Romans built the "statio" of Ad Ansem and near the temple dedicated to Giove Pennino.
In 1163 Emperor Frederick I of Sweden gave the Eugubian consuls the right to administrate justice in the territory of the town, including the castles owned by the Eugubian clergy, among which that of Scheggia, which had probably been ruled by a lord appointed by the bishop of Gubbio. The castle remained united to Gubbio until the beginning of the 19th century, even though its links changed over the years.
After the and of Napoleon's empire and the restauration of the state of the Church, Scheggia became independent.
The main places of interest are:
the Abbey of Santa Maria di Sitria (11th century), near Scheggia - the Hermitage of San Emiliano in Congiuntoli, founded by San Romualdo in the XI century; today, the building complex consists in a church and a series of rooms inhabited by local farmers - the Sanctuary of Monte Calvario (17th century) which rises on the hill of the same name overhanging Scheggia; inside there is a valuable wooden crucifix of the 6th century.
Scheggia is a nice summer resort. Naturalistic excursions can be made to the nearby villages and to Mount Cucco.
