Scheggino is the town closest to the river Nera.
Its waters lap round the old houses and a man-made canal, dug to supply power to a mill, divides the town in two.
The Valcasana spring adds to the watery beauty of Scheggino.
The waters have made themselves felt in more ways than one: the traditional industries of trout and shrimp-fishing have given rise to a local cuisine very different from that of the rest of the valley, where meat, especially pork, is the basic ingredient for all the best dishes.
Truffles, of out-standing quality in this area, have also played their part in creating a style of cuisine as unusual as it is delicious, blending admirably with fresh-water fish to produce noble dishes.
The Valcasana springs make a natural garden where the water flows peacefully among ilex, oak, pine and box; an ideal place for restoring the spirit.
