Sigillo
Sigillum is the primitive Umbrian name, derived from the "Totem", a sacred animal of an Umbrian tribe named "Sugillates".
The opinion of the studious Giacomo Devoto is that an Umbrian tribe, "Su(g)illates", living in a territory called "Su(g)illum" changed its name that, as it normally happens in the Umbrian dialect lost the "g" before the palatal vowel and in Latin became "Suillum" as it is documented by Pliny the Elder in his "Naturalis Historia".
A Roman municipality ruled by "duoviri", Suillim was situated along the consular road Flaminia, between the present Sigillo and Villa Scirca, where we can see Bridge Spiano and the Etruscan Bridge (3rd century).
For centuries it underwent, the invasions of the barbarians who went along the Flaminia to Rome.
Vico, called Lupone, a friend of Otto III's, took possession of the lands of Sigillo, Fossato, Gualdo and Nocera and he dominated these territories without problems. He handed on his possessions to his descendants, until 1230, when Sigillo was torn down by Bertoldo Lutzen. In 1274 Siggillo was a castle of Perugia, and during the many wars, it was always rebuilt and fortified by the Perugians, who held this very strategically important outpost.
In 1333 the church of St Andrews was documented and its goods were registered in 1402.
In 1444 there was news about a hospital dedicated to St Mary.
In 1816 it came back under the dominion of the Church and it became part of the reign of Italy on 1860.
