The churches

The Cathedral
The magnificent Cathedral of Spoleto, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was built at the end of the 12th century, in Romanesque style, in the place of the old cathedral destroyed by Barbarossa in 1155, and was consecrated by Innocenzo III in 1198. The façade, divided into three vertical compartments, presents in the lower part a splendid Romanesque portal and an elegant portico in Renaissance style; in the median part there are a blind gallery, a splendid rose-window and other four small rose-windows; in the upper storey, triangular in shape, can be admired three rose-windows and three ogival arches, the median one with a mosaic Byzantine in style. Next to the church there is the big bell-tower of the 12th century, built using Roman and Early Middle Ages materials.
The interior, rebuilt in the 1600s and renovated in the 1700s, has a Latin-cross plan, three naves and a large apse, and it contains a series of important works of art: a statue of Pope Urbano VIII by Bernini; paintings by Pinturicchio; the wonderful frescoes by Filippo Lippi that decorate the Choir; other frescoes, sculptures, and the tomb of Filippo Lippi, commissioned and paid by Lorenzo de'Medici, with an epigraph by Poliziano.
From the adjoining presbitery, which preserves an autograph of Saint Francis, one can descend to the crypt of S. Primiano: built in the 9th century, it has a barrel-vault and frescoes of the same period, representing a rare example of the Early Middle Ages monuments.

San Gregorio Maggiore
It is a Romanesque church, begun in 1079 and consecrated in 1146; damaged and renovated many times, it was restored in the 20th century. On the left of the façade there is a 16th century portico, through which one can enter the Cappella degli Innocenti: built in the 1300s, it has some frescoes showing scenes of Santa Abbondanza, buried in the church, according to what an inscription reads, together with other ten thousand Christian martyr.

San Nicolò
A Gothic church built in 1304, damaged by fire in the 1800s, it was restored in the 1950s; the façade presents a fine ogival portal, and next to the church there is the ex-monastery where Lutero stayed in 1512.

Santa Eufemia
Its entrance is situated in the courtyard of the Archbishop's Residence; the building, dating back probably to the 12th century, is rather interesting: in Romanesque style, it has a simple façade, the interior divided into three naves with three apses, and, the only one in Umbria, women's galleries.

San Paolo Inter Vineas
It is a very old church: mentioned by Gregorio Magno, therefore already built in the 6th-7th centuries, it was restored in the 10th century, than restructured again in the 12th and 13th centuries; Romanesque in style, its interior has three naves divided by pillars. The altar, found during some restoration works, is the one consecrated by Gregorio IX in 1234.

Other
Other churches: S. Domenico, S. Lorenzo, S. Ansano, S. Filippo, S. Maria della Manna d'Oro, SS. Giovanni e Paolo – the latter contains some frescoes among which there is a "S. Francesco" that represents one of the first icons of the Saint.
