| The territory
The Upper Tiber Valley is the northernmost Umbrian territory. It has always been in close cultural and social contact with the neighbouring regions of Tuscany and the Marches.
The River Tiber runs through the entire length of the valley for 50 kilometres, bestowing great fertility on the soil, intensely farmed with tobacco using high-tech methods.
The district comprises eight townships: Città di Castello, Citerna, Lisciano Niccone, Montone, Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, Pietralunga, San Giustino and Umbertide.
The excellent tourist potentiality includes the efficient Fontecchio thermal centre. The waters were famous even in Roman times for the cure of skin and liver complaints, and authorises.
The entire district teems with splendid works of art, and a happy balance has been achieved between ancient and modem, tradition and progress.
Citerna, Montone, Pietralunga and Monte Santa Tiberina, all deeply imbued with ancient civilisation, combine the panoramic beauty of their position with sober mediaeval town planning.
In Umbertide, S. Giustino and Lisciano Niccone, the many castles, parish churches and abbeys bear witness to a past history of intense social changes, and artistic and religious lifestyles.
The most representative town in the Upper Valley is Città di Castello, on account of its works of art, economic development and population. Although mediaeval monuments are by no means lacking, it is a rare Umbrian example of Renaissance art and culture, which harmonises perfectly with the many events of national importance organised here throughout the year, involving music, craftwork, agriculture, gastronomy or sport, and which draw a host of visitors.
