Suggested itineraries

The Tiber river runs parallel to highway E45 and divides Todi's territory into two parts almost similar.
On the left bank of the river there are the Municipalities of Collazzone, Massa Martana and Todi and on the right bank the Municipalities of Fratta Todina, Marsciano and Monte Castello di Vibio.

Itinerary on the left bank:

  • As soon as we arrive to Todi we capture the sight of the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, a masterpiece very close to the art of Bramante, while going towards the town centre and towering from an impressive flight of stairs, there is the Church of Saint Fortunato the patron saint of the town, a wonderful example of Gothic style; a few steps from the right side of the Church there is Piazzale IV Novembre, the highest point of the town, where we find the ruins of the Rocca, destroyed in 1503, and from which it is possible to admire a wonderful view of the South-Western part of the Tiber valley.
The Medieval Piazza del Popolo, surrounded by splendid buildings and by the Cathedral, is the beautiful centre of the town which is also a meeting point for all the inhabitants of Todi. Moreover, Todi is full of churches, monuments, Etruscan and Roman ruins, medieval districts still untouched, narrow alleys and patrician houses ready to be enjoyed in the great tranquillity that characterizes this corner of the earth.
Leaving Todi and going North, as if going upstream, you will arrive at Collazzone. This small centre is 500mt above the sea level in a beatiful dominating position on a hilltop, in a region covered by woods of oaks, pine-trees and olive-trees.
The town still has the medieval walls and the narrow alleys, a reminder of the ancient urban plan.
On Christmas night in 1306 Jacopone da Todi died in the Convent of Saint Laurence.
In the parish church a polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna dating back to the XIVth century can be admired.
Going Southwards, at the foot of Monti Martani (Mt. Martani), we arrive to Massa Martana where we find the Church of Santa Maria in Pantano and the Abbey of Saint Faustino, dating back to the XIIIth and Ith centuries respectively. While, not far from the ancient Via Flaminia there are the Catacombs, the only catacombs known to be in Umbria and the Fonnaia Bridge of the Ist century A.C.

Itinerary on the right bank:

  • Crossing one of the numerous bridges over the Tiber River we soon find ourselves in the three towns of the right bank of the river which complete Todi's territory and also our ideal itinerary.
Coming from the North we find Marsciano, and if we have the opportunity of traveling along the road which is called the "road of the hill", we must stop at Cerqueto, a village under the Municipality of Marsciano, whose parish church houses a fresco depicting Saint Sebastian, which is the first masterpiece by Perugino with an ascertained date (1478).
Marsciano preserves the ruins of the Castle of Conti di Marsciano as this centre was their fief.
Characteristic and charming plateaus surround the Town of Marsciano and in its territory it is possible to find rural centres, villages, castles of an uncomparable beauty such as the ones of Saint Apollinare, Spina, Mercatello and many others.
Leaving Marsciano and going Southwards, we find Fratta Todina , one of the smallest towns in Umbria, which still preserves a huge part of the Castle boundary walls, the Palazzo Vescovile built on demand of Cardinal G.B. Altieri, who was the Bishop of Todi during the first half of the XVIIth century.
Not far from the town stands the Convent of Santa Maria della Spineta, one of the most impressive places of the franciscan tradition, for its connection with its most ancient events.
Going Southwards but climbing a narrow path we arrive to Monte Castello di Vibio.
Probably of Etruscan origin, the town is built on the top of a hill in a beautiful panoramic position and still preserves ruins of medieval walls.
Of great importance is the prestigious small Teatro della Concordia, built in 1808 and whose structure is an example of harmony and skill. It has been classified among the world smallest theatres with two series of boxes, with valuable frescoes and a very small auditorium.
But what most strikes the tourist is the view: the entire colourful Tiber valley stretching from Perugia to Orvieto.
The tourist who wants to go to Todi needs only to travel a few kilometres, almost 15, to cross the Tiber and he is at the centre of Umbria again.
